Sam Skolnick

The Member Spotlight showcases those who demonstrate the characteristics necessary for success, both in and out of the gym. Sam is a relatively new member to the gym but has fully committed herself to her fitness goals and has risen to the top of our Commitment Club list! She moved here this summer from New Jersey and has made the gym a large part of her daily routine. We asked her some questions about her CrossFit journey:

  1. What led you to CrossFit? Describe your experience.

I was in the process of losing a lot of weight and I was talking to my boss about how bored I was with my workout routine. He suggested I try CrossFit and I laughed at him and told him I would never do something so stupid. The next day he literally made it an order that I meet him for 6am CrossFit class. I ended up loving it so much that I joined that same morning. That was two years ago, and I haven’t looked back.

  1. What have been the most significant changes you've noticed? These could be lifestyle, body composition, or performance.

CrossFit has been the avenue to me being interested in learning a lot about my physical and mental wellness. I learned about fitness, nutrition, recovery, mental health, sleep patterns, and so much more. I still like to enjoy myself as I believe life requires a balance, but overall, I am just more conscious of my health and care a lot more about myself.

My old gym in New Jersey (shout-out to CrossFit Medford!) had a going away WOD for me when I moved to Arizona that was just heavy cleans and running and that was perfect! I also loved 20.4! Anything with a clean is fine by me.

  1. Tell us something we don't know about you! Something not fitness related.

People seem surprised to learn I am finishing up my Military career. I spent the last 6 years in the Air Force stationed in New Jersey as an Air Transportation troop. My coolest experience was getting coined by the Vice President for helping with Air Force Two (his airplane). Another one was catching a wild horse and pranking the Army with it, but I’m not supposed to talk about that...

  1. What's next? Have you set any goals for the future?

Soon I think I am going to be focusing on just lifting. I have always been more interested in the heavy side of things, so I’d like to see how that goes, maybe a local meet is in the cards...Maybe.
